CHAPTER 19
To be honest, our history presentation on Friday is complete and utter trash.
The first sign of trouble is when we watch the first group go.
âAllow us to introduce you toâ¦,â Lindsay Rocha says, projecting like sheâs onstage at the Democratic National Convention, âthe Gulf War.â
She actually does jazz hands for a few seconds. God, theater kids really do need an ego check. Celeste Schmidt nudges her, hard, and Lindsay stumbles a little. Iâm the only one who giggles. Mr. Willisâs head snaps over in my direction and he gives me a look. Even Danny turns his head so I can see his judgmental expression. Siobhan, on the other hand, doesnât turn around at all.
Jesus.
Despite the minor hiccup, itâs easy to tell that Lindsay, Celeste, and Kevin Keegan actually rehearsed what they were going to sayâand not just because of their cue cards. They finish each otherâs segments, easily flying through their presentation and leaving enough room for questions.
The second sign things are going to shit is what Mr. Willis says when theyâve finished: âInteresting presentation. But remember, everyone, youâre meant to use three primary sources in your presentations. Not two.â
Lindsay mumbles something on her way back to her seat.
The next two groups also seem to have actually prepared. One group screens part of a documentary, while another has us analyze part of the Patriot Act. Our group was planning to mostly wing it, which suddenly seems like a catastrophically terrible idea.
I gulp.
âWell,â Mr. Willis says. âNext group. Siobhan, Danny, and Mahalia will be teaching us about the infamous election of 2000.â
We awkwardly shuffle to the front of the room. Siobhan stands directly in front of the SMART Board for some reason, as far away from meâand Dannyâas possible. When Danny goes to stand next to her, she leans almost imperceptibly away. What the hell is going on there?
âMahalia?â Mr. Willis gestures from his desk. âThe PowerPoint?â
Right. I log onto my Google Classroom from his laptop, which rests on the podium in the front of the classroom. For some reason, what I see on the computer wonât appear up on the screen. Danny starts to drum against the SMART Board and it makes me sweat with irritation.
Mr. Willis seems to sense that something is wrongâmaybe Siobhan was right and he just smells fear. He leans over my shoulder, studying the computer and messing around with the settings.
Five minutes isnât a long time, but it definitely feels like forever when youâre standing in front of a class and your teacher is trying to figure out your PowerPoint. Danny hits a particularly jarring beat and Mr. Willis winces.
âMr. Elliot,â Mr. Willis says with a heavy sigh. âPlease stop.â
That makes me snort, just a bit, and Mr. Willis glances over at me with something that could be called a smile. Suddenly, the words 2000: STOLEN OR EARNED??? appear on the SMART Board in big black letters.
âAll right,â Mr. Willis says, clapping his hands together.
